If you’re sure that you require a battery replacement, this blog can serve as a helpful guide. The replacement process is explained in simple terms to make it easy to follow.

To make the Subaru key fob work properly, it needs a battery. The battery lasts around six years, but how you use the fob can affect how long the battery lasts. Smart key fobs usually use up more battery power than regular fobs. Various types of Subaru fob batteries are available, but the most common ones are CR2025 and CR2032.

You can find 3V batteries designed to power key fobs and meet your expectations, and they are available both online and offline from dealers and vendors. Now, before you proceed with replacing the battery, make sure you have the required tools handy.

Step 1: Remove The Mechanical Key

To start, you should take out the mechanical key from the fob. At the back of the fob, there is a button you need to press with your thumb. This will release the mechanical key. If you find the button too small for your thumb, you can use a screwdriver to push it. Once you press the button, use your other hand to pull out the mechanical key.

Step 2: Open The Housing

To access the control module, use a screwdriver to open the housing of the fob. Before doing so, tape the screwdriver’s tip to prevent damage to the control module. Insert the screwdriver gently through the area where you removed the mechanical key to split the housing into two parts.

If you separate the housing into two parts, you’ll see that one part holds the control module, and the other acts as a cover.

Step 3: Remove the Old, Insert the New

It’s best to use a spudger or butter knife to remove the battery from the metal contacts holding it carefully. Be cautious so you don’t damage the control module.

The most common batteries used for replacing the key fob battery in Subaru cars are CR2032 3V and CR2025 3V. However, it’s important to refer to the car manual to determine the correct type of battery for your specific key fob. It’s also important to ensure that the battery properly makes contact with the metal to achieve optimal results.

Step 4: Close The Case and Return the Key

To cover the housing that holds the control module, use the second housing and press it against the first one. After that, put the mechanical key back where it is usually kept. It’s easier to return it than to take it out.

Step 5: Test The Key Fob

To ensure the key fob is working correctly, try using it to start your car. If it doesn’t work after changing the battery, it’s possible that there’s a problem with your vehicle, and you should contact your mechanic or your locksmith for an automotive locksmith service.
