How to Open Key Fob

How to Open a Key Fob

If your car key fob relies on a battery, it can die unexpectedly, like any other battery-powered device. However, you can easily replace the key fob’s battery when needed.

Most modern cars have a key fob that can either be a separate device attached to your keyring, with buttons to lock and unlock the vehicle or be integrated into the key. These fobs use battery power and transmit a wireless signal to the car to control it.

Key fob batteries can last for a few years, but if the battery becomes weak, you may be unable to unlock or start your car remotely. The good news is that replacing the battery is a straightforward process. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to open the key fob.

Search for the Battery Type Imprinted on the Plastic

The type of battery for specific key fobs may be labeled on the outside so that you can purchase the correct battery before opening the fob. The top three key fob battery brands are Duracell, Energizer, and Panasonic.

Locate the Seam Where the Two Halves of the Fob Connect

To open most key fobs, snap open the two halves at the seam. Some fobs might have a notch to help you open them. If your car needs the key in the ignition, avoid hanging any items on the keyring except for the fob. The weight of other keys can cause damage and create a safety risk.

Carefully Pry at the Seam

You only need one tool to change the battery in your key fob: a small, thin flat-bladed screwdriver. Gently pry apart the two halves down the middle to open the fob.

Note: When changing the battery for the first time, it may be challenging to open the fob. Please be careful and use a screwdriver to gently lift the fob until it comes apart into two pieces (front and back). Afterward, you can then proceed to change the battery.

Remove the Old Battery and Insert the New One

If you’re struggling to remove the battery, try using a flat-bladed screwdriver as a lever. The battery should come out quickly with a gentle push. When inserting the new battery, ensure the plus and minus signs are in the same position as the old one.

Close Your Key Fob Securely and Check if it is Functioning Properly.

To put the fob back together, reverse the process of taking it apart and then try pressing the buttons to test if it works properly. The device should function just like it did before.

A critical step in fixing the key fob is aligning the front and back and applying significant pressure. You’ll hear a clicking noise once they’re tightly in place. To verify that the key fob is functioning correctly, test it by pressing the lock and unlock buttons. Remember to reinsert the manual key before you’re finished. After completing these steps, the key fob will be ready to use.

Final Thoughts

Replacing your key fob battery is a simple and quick automotive locksmith service. Make sure you have the correct type of battery for your device, and follow these steps to get it done quickly and correctly. You can easily handle this task independently with a few essential tools and patience.

In conclusion, replacing the battery in your key fob is a straightforward process that can be completed with minimal tools and effort. With the correct type of battery, you should have no trouble getting your car to start again. The key is to take it slow and carefully follow all the instructions outlined above. Good luck!
