How to Program a Key Fob
The ignition system in automobiles has undergone significant advancements over the past four decades, reflecting the progress of automotive technologies overall.
Nowadays, cars no longer use the simple and cheap mechanical-only keys that can be made for less than $10. Instead, they use computer technology for better theft protection.
These keys are called chip-integrated keys and need to be programmed into your car for it to start. A car locksmith service or a dealer/mechanic usually does the programming. However, there are some cases where you can program the key on your own, as explained below.
Locksmiths specializing in automobiles can key fob programming by linking to the car’s computer through the OBD port, which can be found under the steering column.
With available software, locksmiths can program the new keys and fobs to be recognized by the car while eliminating the old ones. This is helpful when a key has been misplaced and needs to be removed as a starting option.
If your car keys are self-programmable, you can program them yourself. However, the programming equipment for older cars may be limited in affordability and functionality and may only work on certain types of vehicles.
How Locksmiths Program Your Keys/Fobs

Suppose you can unably self-program your keys because there’s no self-programming process available, you don’t have enough operating keys, or you can’t afford the necessary tools, computer, or software. In that case, you’ll have to seek the services of an automotive locksmith or dealer.
Auto tool manufacturers are provided with programming protocols by many American and Asian car companies. This allows them to create software and hardware which can be used for programming car keys.
Afterward, the locksmith buys the necessary equipment to provide programming as a service to their customers.
To program a car key, remote, or key fob, an automotive locksmith will connect their computer with specific software to your car’s OBD port, typically under your dashboard. Different companies provide software and computers for programming, often supporting varying vehicle makes and models, and this process requires using a computer programming tool.
It can be expensive for a locksmith to service automotive keys because there are too many makes and models for any system to program them.
The programming software enables the locksmith to add or remove keys from the car, providing the following benefits:
- Ford vehicles have a maximum limit of four keys that can be programmed into their system. However, a locksmith can help you open up slots for programming new keys by erasing keys that are no longer used using their computer.
- If your keys have been lost or stolen, you can prevent anyone from starting the car or opening the doors (for FOBs/Smart Keys) by removing their access from the car.
A pre-paid token must be available to program car keys using these computers, as most computers have a token system. Therefore, locksmiths cannot program keys all day long on these computers.
The locksmith in your area needs to purchase tokens, which are used for programming car keys. Each programming attempt requires a token, resulting in a cost for the locksmith. This cost is already included in the programming fee charged by the locksmith.
Can I Program My Car Key?

Programing your key/FOB for certain vehicles by following your car’s service manual instructions is possible. However, it’s important to note that while some vehicles can have the remote portion of the key program, the key itself may not be programmable. As a result, although you may be able to access the doors/trunk, you may still need to connect the key to the car’s computer to ensure the vehicle can be started.
Programming your key fob can vary in terms of processes and procedures. You may need one or two already-programmed keys to be able to self-program. You can find instructions on programing your car keys and determining if self-programming is possible.
